‘KABAMBANNUAGAN: OUR VOICES, OUR LIVES’ launched

Honolulu, HI--Timpuyog: Ilokano Student Organization, in collaboration with Nakem Youth and the UH Manoa Ilokano Language and Literature Program, launched October 29 the first-ever bilingual non-fiction narrative, Kabambannuagan: Our Voices, Our Lives.

The book is a truthful chronicle of the lives of fourteen people, all of them of Ilokano ancestry, some born in Hawai’i, and others coming to Hawai’i at a young age to live diasporic lives away from the familiar sense of home and homeland in the Philippines.

The Guild of Ilokano Writers Global Press—Timpuyog Dagiti Mannurat nga Ilokano Global—in collaboration with Nakem Youth, published the book.

Kabambannuagan—the prime of youth—is a product of the Nakem Youth Writers Workshop held in conjunction with the UH Ilokano Language and Literature Program’s Community Language Project.

The Writers Workshop was facilitated by Aurelio Agcaoili, program coordinator of Ilokano and editor in chief of the Fil-Am Observer, and assisted by Jeffrey Acido, program director of Nakem Youth.

Kabambannuagan is the first attempt to provide a venue for the voices of the young Ilokanos to be heard, in the English language that they are familiar with or have forced themselves to become familiar with as part of their Americanization process.

A translation into Ilokano, done by Agcaoili, was meant to have these voices heard by the Ilokano community at large particularly that part of that community that is most at home with the Ilokano language.

Edited by Agcaoili and Acido, Kabambannuagan promises to be the first of a series of publications aimed to make known to the public the various social issues related to education, immigration, gender and sexuality, culture and heritage rights, politics and leadership, and civics and citizenship.

Kabambannuagan features the works of the following: Lourdes Acido, Sharon Agamao, Rachelle Aurellano, Brenna dela Rosa, Cindy dela Vega, Glenda Duldulao, Charissa Fabia, Janelle Funtanilla, Jaclyn Galinato, Kristine Garabiles, Walter Luares, Kathryn Parado, Izaiah Pascua, and Calvin Rilveria.

To avail of a copy, write to: nakemyouth@gmail.com or call Jeff: (808) 295-7687 or Calvin Rilveria, (808) 343-9050.

Congressman Magi, Dr Ricky to grace 5th Nakem Conference as plenary speakers

Four plenary speakers are taking part in the 5th Nakem International Conference on “Education to Cultural Democracy and Linguistic Justice” to be held December 16-18 at the Caoayan Heritage Resort in Caoayan, Ilocos Sur.

The town is adjacent to Vigan City, a heritage city in Northern Philippines and once the bastion of the Spanish government that ruled the place—and the country—for more than 300 years.

Hon. Magtanggol Gunigundo, whose legislative initiative for Mother Language Education gained national attention and whose proposal he saw to it that it is implemented in his city’s school district, will speak on “Mother Language Education from the Perspective of Legislation and Advocacy” on December 16.

Gunigundo, currently the deputy majority floor leader of the House of Representatives of the Republic of the Philippines, has been in the forefront of advocacy work for MLE. He has joined forces with 170+Talaytayan MLE to pursue a nationwide campaign for the adoption of the mother language of children as life-changing approach to equipping literacy and life-skills to students.

Dr. Ricardo Nolasco, former chairperson of the Commission on the Filipino Language and president of 170+Talaytayan MLE, will speak on “Our Urgent Tasks in the Mother Language Education Movement.”

170+Talaytay MLE is a non-profit/non-government advocacy group organized to advance the cause of mother tongue-based mother language education in the Philippines. Some of those serving the board of trustees of the organization aside from Nolasco are Lino Faelnar, Arnold Azurin, Ched Arzadon, Kiko Datar, Lydia Liwanag, and Aurelio Agcaoili.

Nakem Conferences Philippines and Nakem Conferences International, in coordination with the University of Hawai’i Ilokano Language and Literature Program, will partner with local school districts Northern Philippines in pushing for MLE.

Kabambannuagan Book Launch

Kabambannuagan, a bilingual anthology of young writers of Ilokano descent, all of them tracing their roots from Kalihi, a district in Honolulu, Hawaii, will be launched at the Campus Center, University of Hawaii at Manoa, Honolulu, Hawaii, on October 29, 2010, from 6 PM to 9 PM. The meditations of these young writers are a result of a series of creative writing workshops put together by Nakem Youth and directed and facilitated by Aurelio Solver Agcaoili of the UH Ilokano Program.

Kabambannuagan, originally written in English, edited by Aurelio Agcaoili and Jeffrey Tangonan Acido, and translated into Ilokano by Agcaoili, gathers the work of Lourdes Acido, Sharon Agamao, Rachelle Aurellano, Calvin C. Rilveria,  Kristine Garabiles, Cindy dela Vega, Janelle Funtanilla, Kathryn Parado, Brenna dela Rosa, Jaclyn Galinato, Izaiah Pascual, Walter Luares, Charissa Fabia, and Glenda Duldulao.

Published by Nakem Youth, in collaboration with TMI Global Press, the book will be available commercially. For information, contact Jeffrey Acido, jeffrey.acido@gmail.com or Cal Rilveria, ccrilveria@gmail.com.

Contemporary English-Ilokano Dictionary

A contemporary English-Ilokano Dictionary written by Aurelio Solver Agcaoili will be launched at the the 5th Nakem International Conference to be held on Dec. 16-18, 2010 in Caoayan, Ilocos Norte, a resort town close to the famed world heritage city of Vigan.

The dictionary, following a pre-category approach, is in support of the effort to intellectualize the Ilokano language and make it responsive to the changes of a globalized world without losing sight of the requisites of indigenousness.

Agcaoili is currently the program coordinator for Ilokano at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. He is one of the founding officers of 170+ Talaytayan MLE, an advocacy group dedicated to cultural democracy and linguistic justice in education.

Rationale

The 5th Nakem International Conference, “Adal ken Sirib: Education to Cultural Diversity and Linguistic Democracy,” takes off from the vision and mission of Nakem Conferences International and Nakem Conferences  Philippines to evolve a culture of diversity and pluralism in and outside the classroom.

The Nakem Conferences movement is particularly committed to the promotion, perpetuation, and production of cultural forms and expressions in the Amianan Philippines, forms and expressions that are linked up with the ideals of human and social freedom.

The conference on “Adal and Sirib” --Education and Wisdom--is aimed to address the difficult issues of justice and democracy in education, including issues that relate to mother language education, to cultural nationalism, and to biocultural diversity. Papers and panel presentations pertaining to these topics are welcome. Proposals covering specific issues on educational equity, language access, heritage rights, and cultural plurality in any of the ethnolinguistic groups of Northern Philippines are also encouraged.

Themes and topics to be accepted at the 5th Nakem International Conference:

·      Varieties and Variations of Amianan Life, Language, and Literature
·      Ilokano Intellectual Tradition
·      Amianan Intellectual Tradition
·      Symbols, Signs and Sense: Rituals and Ceremonies of the Amianan
·      Education to Democracy: The Case of Mother Language Education in the Amianan
·      Education to Linguistic Democracy—Or Why All Amianan Languages are Important
·      The Promise of MLE for Social Equity
·      Biocultural Diversity in the Amianan
·      Philosophy and Practice of Cultural Nationalism
·      The Question of the Nation and the National in Amianan Historical Narratives
·      Countering the Hegemon, Encountering the Nation Among Nations
·      Youth Panel: Giving Witness to Cultural Democracy and Pluralism—Our Stories So Far

Each abstract must contain a title, the author/s, institutional affiliation of author/s (if applicable), and their contact number including email address. The abstracts are blind reviewed by a committee. Notice of acceptance of abstract will be sent by email only on or before August 15, 2010.
