Rationale

The 5th Nakem International Conference, “Adal ken Sirib: Education to Cultural Diversity and Linguistic Democracy,” takes off from the vision and mission of Nakem Conferences International and Nakem Conferences  Philippines to evolve a culture of diversity and pluralism in and outside the classroom.

The Nakem Conferences movement is particularly committed to the promotion, perpetuation, and production of cultural forms and expressions in the Amianan Philippines, forms and expressions that are linked up with the ideals of human and social freedom.

The conference on “Adal and Sirib” --Education and Wisdom--is aimed to address the difficult issues of justice and democracy in education, including issues that relate to mother language education, to cultural nationalism, and to biocultural diversity. Papers and panel presentations pertaining to these topics are welcome. Proposals covering specific issues on educational equity, language access, heritage rights, and cultural plurality in any of the ethnolinguistic groups of Northern Philippines are also encouraged.

Themes and topics to be accepted at the 5th Nakem International Conference:

·      Varieties and Variations of Amianan Life, Language, and Literature
·      Ilokano Intellectual Tradition
·      Amianan Intellectual Tradition
·      Symbols, Signs and Sense: Rituals and Ceremonies of the Amianan
·      Education to Democracy: The Case of Mother Language Education in the Amianan
·      Education to Linguistic Democracy—Or Why All Amianan Languages are Important
·      The Promise of MLE for Social Equity
·      Biocultural Diversity in the Amianan
·      Philosophy and Practice of Cultural Nationalism
·      The Question of the Nation and the National in Amianan Historical Narratives
·      Countering the Hegemon, Encountering the Nation Among Nations
·      Youth Panel: Giving Witness to Cultural Democracy and Pluralism—Our Stories So Far

Proposal Requirements

Abstracts for individual paper presentations must deal with the issues stated in the rationale. These must be between 250-300 words, excluding references. Each abstract must contain a title, the author/s, institutional affiliation of author/s (if applicable), and their contact number including email address. The abstracts are blind reviewed by a committee. Notice of acceptance of abstract will be sent by email only on or before August 15, 2010.
For panel proposals, each panel shall consist of three members, all of them working on the same theme, issue or topic but each speaker must present an individual paper. Two abstracts are needed: the panel abstract and the abstract for each paper, with the same specific requirements as those in individual presentations.

Send abstracts to: nakem2010@gmail.com. Write in the subject heading: Abstract Nakem2010:[your last name] [For example: nakem2010:Visaya]
