Congressman Magi, Dr Ricky to grace 5th Nakem Conference as plenary speakers

Four plenary speakers are taking part in the 5th Nakem International Conference on “Education to Cultural Democracy and Linguistic Justice” to be held December 16-18 at the Caoayan Heritage Resort in Caoayan, Ilocos Sur.

The town is adjacent to Vigan City, a heritage city in Northern Philippines and once the bastion of the Spanish government that ruled the place—and the country—for more than 300 years.

Hon. Magtanggol Gunigundo, whose legislative initiative for Mother Language Education gained national attention and whose proposal he saw to it that it is implemented in his city’s school district, will speak on “Mother Language Education from the Perspective of Legislation and Advocacy” on December 16.

Gunigundo, currently the deputy majority floor leader of the House of Representatives of the Republic of the Philippines, has been in the forefront of advocacy work for MLE. He has joined forces with 170+Talaytayan MLE to pursue a nationwide campaign for the adoption of the mother language of children as life-changing approach to equipping literacy and life-skills to students.

Dr. Ricardo Nolasco, former chairperson of the Commission on the Filipino Language and president of 170+Talaytayan MLE, will speak on “Our Urgent Tasks in the Mother Language Education Movement.”

170+Talaytay MLE is a non-profit/non-government advocacy group organized to advance the cause of mother tongue-based mother language education in the Philippines. Some of those serving the board of trustees of the organization aside from Nolasco are Lino Faelnar, Arnold Azurin, Ched Arzadon, Kiko Datar, Lydia Liwanag, and Aurelio Agcaoili.

Nakem Conferences Philippines and Nakem Conferences International, in coordination with the University of Hawai’i Ilokano Language and Literature Program, will partner with local school districts Northern Philippines in pushing for MLE.
